Southside Bitumen Driveways FAQ
- What is a pothole?
- A pothole is a hollow or depression in the asphalt surface. This is usually caused by wear or the erosion of the underlying base. If left exposed these potholes can become larger and deeper causing more damage to the surrounding surface. Wet weather can also cause potholes if the base has any soft spots.
- What is crazing?
- Crazing is fine cracks in the asphalt surface and can sometimes give a “shattered” appearance. There are many factors that can cause crazing such as the substrate expanding and contracting, Surface too thin, poor drainage or heavy vehicles turning their wheels on the surface.
- Why does my new Asphalt look darker than the existing surface?
- The existing asphalt surface has been exposed to the elements and just like paint, fabrics or almost any other product, it has faded over time. As a result, the new asphalt surface will appear darker.
- Is Asphalt and Bitumen the same?
- No, Asphalt is a product that is mixed at a plant and delivered to the site ready to be used. Bitumen required multiple on-site processes from spraying emulsion to spreading the stone. For a better explanation please see our pages for Asphalt Surfacing and Bitumen Surfacing.
- How long will my Asphalt driveway last?
- An asphalt driveway can last in excess of 30 years! This will be directly impacted by various factors including usage, climate and how it is maintained. With the appropriate care, your asphalt driveway will last you for many trouble-free years.
- How is an Asphalt driveway constructed?
- Construction starts from well below the finished surface that you will admire for many years. It requires the use of machinery to excavate the existing ground, adding a quality roadbase substrate and then compacting. After this is completed, it is then topped with a layer of asphalt that is compacted again. It may also be necessary to install pipes to ensure adequate drainage for a long-lasting finish. Please contact us for more information regarding your specific application.
- How much will Asphalt cost me?
- On average, Asphalt will work out to half the cost of a concrete alternative. Of course, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when working out the final cost. Existing surface, amount of substrate work needed to provide a quality and lasting finish and water drainage to name a few.
